On the 10th of May the popular TV series 'Good Morning America' featured the use of simulation in surgical training. This was illustrated with Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston using one of the modules (procedural cholecystectomy training) in SEP from SimSurgery.

The co-founder of SimSurgery® AS Jan Sigurd Røtnes demonstrated the SurgicalSim Education Platform (SEP™) to the Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry (Dag Terje Andersen) and the Minister of Health and Care Services (Sylvia Brustad) at the National Hospital (photo: Rikshospitalet, 15 Nov. 2006). SimSurgery® was selected as a successful example of state funding instruments for innovation and commercialization. The ministers predisted increased funding to healthcare focused enterprises.

 

SimSurgery® AS appoints new CEO

Oslo, 31 October 2006 - SimSurgery® AS today announced that they have appointed Vidar Sørhus as Chief Executive Officer of the company. A promotion from the position as Chief Operational Officer, his primary role at SimSurgery® AS will now be to bring the commercialization of the company forward and to maintain the company in the forefront of surgical simulation.

Vidar Sørhus holds a MSc in control theory and a PhD in medical technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Sørhus has been with SimSurgery® since 2000 and has had the position as COO during the last years.

Co-founder and currently CEO, Jan Sigurd Røtnes, MD, PhD is leaving the company to pursue his medical career at the Directorate for Health and Social Affairs (SHdir). He will be leading the department with national responsibilities for Guidelines, Priorities and Quality. Røtnes has been Chief Executive Officer since the establishment of the company i 1999. Røtnes will continue his commitment to the company as a member of the board.

Erik Langaker, Chairman, SimSurgery® AS, said, "During the last months, Vidar Sørhus has been responsible for the successful development of the new product platform, which will be an important value driver for the company in the future. With his economical and technological focus, I believe that Vidar Sørhus will further accelerate the positive trend of the company".

The winners of the ICT Prize were proposed to the European Commision by Euro-CASE, based on the evaluation by independent experts from 16 countries.
The European ICT Prize Awards Ceremony took place on March 23, 2006 at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

2000:

 

The core development group was established, consisting of experts in the field of medicine, surgical simulation and haptics, and the development of the software kernel was started.

 

1999:

 

SimSurgery® was established with initial funding from the Norwegian state (SND), Mobile Media and the Interventional Centre. The company had a founding staff of one researcher coming from the Interventional Centre, (Jan Sigurd Røtnes, MD, PhD, MSc), and two reasearchers from Sintef Applied Mathematics, (Johannes Kaasa, MSc and Geir Westgaard, PhD).

 

Background

SimSurgery® originates from 3 leading knowledge based groups in Oslo, Norway:

- The Interventional Centre, established at Rikshospitalet (the National Hospital of Norway) with initial funding of USD 13 mill, with focus on surgical simulators and robotics
- Mobile Media, a leading provider of 3D animation technologies and mobile services
- Sintef Applied Mathematics, a world leading scientific center in the field of Geometry and Mathematical Modelling

The need for surgical simulators was realized and research projects were started, leading up to the establishment of SimSurgery®.
